Admissions FAQ #3: "What Are You Looking For?"

Once a month, we email all of our prospective families to share perspectives, tips, and responses to our most Frequently Asked Questions about the Admissions process. This month, we’re addressing the most frequently asked question of them all: what we look for in a prospective Stone student.

We’re asked regularly what we look for in a prospective Stone student.  To be honest, there isn’t one ideal type of Stone student – our students are mathematicians and athletes and artists and writers – but we do look for two primary attributes in every member of our community:

  1. Relationship to work.  Our north star really is our work.  In each of our students – prospective and current – we want to see evidence that they are here to design, create, and exhibit the most sophisticated work they are capable of;

  2. And, curiosity.  We believe that curiosity is the difference between achievement and accomplishment.  Curiosity fuels iteration and intellectual risk-taking, curiosity enables students to create unexpected breakthroughs and discoveries through exploration and through sustained practice.

We work hard to create an admissions experience in which prospective students have multiple opportunities to show evidence of both.  Our shadow days (we recommend that all applicants schedule a shadow day at Stone), interviews, and application are each designed to clarify our unique culture and teaching and learning practices for visiting students, while also creating ample opportunities for visiting students to showcase their excitement, their relationship to work, their deep curiosity.

We're excited to invite all prospective students and families to learn more about work and life at Stone.  If you are ready to schedule your private tour or shadow day, or if you are interested in joining one of our upcoming Open Houses, head to our Admissions page right here.  If you'd like to learn a little more about our teaching and learning practices, be sure to read:

We can’t wait to welcome you to campus soon!
