Latest Stories About the Stone Community

Meet Our Seniors!

It’s hard for us to believe it, but it’s true: the Class of 2022 will be graduating from Stone soon!  Over the next few weeks, we will be spotlighting students from the Class of 2022 – sharing their accomplishments, their reflections on their time at Stone, and their advice for future members of our community.

Hannah C, Barnard College

Where are you headed next Fall?

I am going to Barnard College of Columbia University. I'm not yet sure what I want to focus on, but right now I'm leaning towards a double-major in art history and American history (but maybe political science?), and a double minor in Jewish studies and... there are too many options, but I love the idea of minoring in human rights studies, a program unique to Barnard.

What are you most excited to learn and experience next year?

First and foremost, I’m excited to be attending one of the Sisters Colleges. Having the opportunity to learn in an institution designed by and for inquisitive women like me is a source of immense pride.  I would highly encourage everyone to read about the history of these institutions, which were originally created to provide women the same higher educational opportunities as men before co-education was commonplace.

Secondly, I can't wait to live in a city!  Although I am a Philadelphian at heart, I have always fostered an appreciation for the kaleidoscope of stories, mannerisms, and lifestyles that are distinctly “New Yorkian”. If I weren't guaranteed housing, my contingency plan would probably be straight out of From The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler – just squatting at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where, as a student in the city, I will have free admission.

What’s a project you feel particularly proud of from your time here at Stone?

In my education at Stone, I have had the chance to be both a learner and a teacher. There is nothing that I love more than engaging with others on issues of social justice and civil rights, something I try to bring to the classroom (like designing and TA-ing a class about the Holocaust and its impact on modern human rights/international justice), but I also live that orientation extracurricularly as well. I believe fundamentally that one of the best ways to improve the world is to empower as many people as possible to use their voices, and just to love learning in general.

What accomplishment are you most proud of from your time here at Stone?

I partnered with our Administrative Team to make voting as accessible to our community as possible – last year, we made the decision to switch the school to “virtual” on Election Day to provide more time and access for the Stone community.  Before I could register and vote or work the polls myself, I volunteered my time as a poll greeter outside the precinct, handing out stickers and candy. I cannot wait to finally use my vote this year, a right for which I have dedicated so much time and energy helping others know how to use. It’s a tremendous responsibility, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

What advice do you have for students just beginning here at Stone?

There's no one word of advice that can resonate with every Stone student, as everyone's experience is so unique!

In all seriousness, what I wish I could tell myself before my first day of school is that you must persist, as you get out of your work only what you put into your work. I might also say not to knock calculus until you've tried it!

And, just for fun: if you could pick one “walk-up” song for graduation, what would you pick?

Easy. Closer to Fine by the Indigo Girls!
