Middle School Science Instructor
The Stone Independent School seeks a full-time Middle School Science Teacher for the 2026 - 2027 school year. The Middle School science curriculum covers general science topics, to include chemistry, biology, and earth science.
We are a problem-based, interdisciplinary day school. We are seeking educators who are inspired by Mission, have experience with progressive education or are willing to learn, who want their work life to feel aligned with their values, who act with empathy, ethicality, and gratitude. All employees are expected to be full members of the school community, engaging in student life, academic purpose, and the school’s Mission.
A typical teaching load consists of three sections (Blocks) each five-week academic term (called a “Mod”). Our science courses are highly experiential and problem-based, while maintaining respect for traditional foundations. Our Middle School science curriculum provides, over a two-year cycle, a foundation for all Upper School science study and exploration. We build upon elementary-level science experimentation to introduce more sophistication and higher level research skills, with the hope that students will be equipped for independent research as they move into upper grades. Scientific writing is also something we value highly in our STEM courses, and Middle School is an excellent place to hone those skills. Teachers at Stone are encouraged to offer electives outside of their core content areas — and to enjoy the vulnerability and exploratory nature of doing so!
Additionally, full-time faculty members teach one immersive course during Intensive Week, help lead morning community time, serve as House leaders, mentors, advisors, and coaches. Our teachers are engaged in the work of designing curriculum and creating a school culture alongside our students. The right candidate will be inquisitive, interested in educational design, engaged by Stone’s Mission and creative ethos, highly energetic, and excited to work with adolescents.

Lower Elementary Classroom Teacher
The Stone Independent School, a problem-based day school rooted in the practices of design thinking, experiential learning, and systems thinking, is seeking a joyful, reflective, and energetic Elementary Classroom Teacher to join our vibrant, problem-based learning community in a mixed age, Lower Elementary (grades 2-4) classroom. This faculty member would serve as the third lead teacher in the mixed-age classroom.
We are seeking an educator who is inspired by Mission, has experience with progressive education or is willing to learn, who wants their work life to feel aligned with their values, who acts with empathy, ethicality, and gratitude. All employees are expected to be full members of the school community, engaging in student life, academic purpose, and the school’s Mission.
Educators at Stone believe that learning is an active, experiential process and are excited to co-create an environment where curiosity is nurtured, questions are welcomed, and students are empowered to explore the world around them. The ideal candidate embraces a problem-based, interdisciplinary approach to teaching and isn’t afraid to get messy —whether that means exploring the natural world, building prototypes, or collaborating with students on meaningful inquiries that connect to real-world challenges.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and implement a responsive, progressive curriculum that supports the developmental needs of elementary learners
Use a studio/workshop approach to literacy, grounded in the Science of Reading
Employ a hands-on, problem-solving approach to mathematics using manipulatives and real-life contexts
Facilitate inquiry-driven science and social studies units rooted in project-based learning
Utilize standardized, non-standardized, formative, and performance-based assessment strategies
Foster strong partnerships with families and maintain open, compassionate communication
Collaborate with colleagues to support an integrated, inclusive, and equitable learning environment
Integrate technology in meaningful and developmentally appropriate ways
Commit to ongoing professional growth with a focus on social justice, cultural competence, and inclusive practices
Actively engage with and model Stone’s Mission in classroom practice and school life
Qualifications:
Teaching experience at the elementary level, preferably in progressive or independent schools or a willingness to learn and work in a progressive educational environment
A passion for inquiry-based, experiential learning
Strong classroom management grounded in respect, relationships, and reflection
Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in education
